Barney McAfferey
on The Great North Wind
October 19, 1992
Barney was one of those guys that brought sunshine to the greatest depths of darkness. Wherever he went, he was a happy man, and happiness rained out of his accordion. I met him, for the first time, at Harbourfront Centre, as he was involved with an accordion themed weekend called The Big Squeeze. At sound check he started playing a Mac Beattie song 'The Lake Dore Waltz'. Then we became friends. He visited me if, and when, he was in Toronto; slept at our place a couple of times and left the distinct scent of the barn from his farm up in Wilno, in the Ottawa Valley.

His story is unique, and brought to life on-air, as both he and I got on so well, that it pours out through the speakers. He's got his accordion and his songs and his stories and his humour. He had been a member of The Wilno Express and recorded two LPs. He was one of the founders of the Killaloe community radio station and did several shows a week there for a while. He was a photographer of nudes in nudist camps (strickly professional, of course). A clown. A jester. He jammed with Lenny Breau. Was a member of the Catholic Worker Movement. And he thanks everyone who's ever helped him in a song.

Featuring the music of
The Four MCs - The Crew Cuts - The Diamonds
The Four Lads - The Arthur Godfrey Talent Show -
The Nobles - The Two-Tones
Things pan out in the most unusal ways sometimes. Like when a friend of mine was going out with a girl who's dad once sang on the Arthur Godfrey Show out of New York, and had a 78 recording of it! As a young man he got into a vocal singing quartet and like Canadian Legends, The Crewcuts and The Four Lads, they made their way to New York City. But alas, the story detours here coz the MC Quartet only ever made one side of music (as their own), an Art Snider production called Boom A De Boom, cashing in on the success of Sh-Boom. (The other side of their record was the boys backing up Miss Toronto:
MARILYN REDDICK w The MC'S QUARTET: Santa's Dream
So I was joined by an original MC Quartetter: Ken MacRae, who tells us all one needs to know to appreciate the greatness of the vocal quartet phenominon. Still gets dozens of hits per month.

Hear It Now

This has to be the NUMBER ONE HEARTBREAKER OF ALL TIME show. I interviewed this intelligent, mature 18 year old rookie who had just released her first CD. She was so full of life, excited by her new opportunities, her summer tour, the people she was meeting in the biz. Her honesty was what shined the most. She performed three songs, live, and we played a couple off the album. It would be the one and only program of its kind.

Five months later Taylor Mitchell was pronounced dead after a coyote attack in the security of a well trodden trail through one of Canada's premier National Parks in Cape Breton. She was on her first tour, playing coffee houses and folk clubs through Atlantic Canada. Everyone was so bewildered. The news began to seep across national lines: the British music mag MOJO wrote a short eulogy to her. I was dumbstruck when I heard the news and then I noticed that I was getting thousands of downloads of this particular show. And it hasn't let up since. I get about 100 downloads a month by just having it here. But it's a show that I, personally, cannot listen to without wanting to cry. It's just too close to the bone for my liking.

But she was wonderful.

Paul Lyon's Choices
February 14, 2008
Hear it now!!!

Paul and I have been best of buds for over 3 decades. He's turned me on to a lot of great music. He shares some of it with us on this program. This picture was not staged: we were actually at Senor Lyon's cottage, up in Bala, which is right beside the train track that I recorded that fantastic train that I used to use to end my Back To The Sugar Camp shows with. You'd swear that some of those trains feel like they're coming right through the place. And one of the ideas I got for BTSC was to have pies for you all, each week. Lovely pies. I also taped his wood stove, which I used to use on the program. Lots of stuff in my life has manifest because of my association with Paul Lyon.

This was a wonderful show filled with great music that Paul has grown to love. Here's the playlist:

JEAN CARIGNAN: The Hangman's Reel (Trad)

DJANGO REINHARDT: Minor Swing (D Reinhardt / S Grappelli)

THE BAND: Whispering Pines (R Manuel / JR Robertson)

ROBERT JR. LOCKWOOD: Ramblin' On My Mind (R Johnson)

MILTY TANNIS: The Milty Beats (Milty)

AIM? GAGNON: Reel de la seigneurie (Trad)

LOUIS ARMSTRONG: West End Blues (K Oliver)

STEVEDORE STEVE: Log Drive on the Pickerel (S Foote)

Great North Wind Classic
Chris Hadfield
Canadian Astronaut
April 2, 1998
Hear the Piecast
It's not that often that a Canadian astronaut comes asking to play live music on my programs. But it did happen once!

I met Air Canada pilot Dave Hadfield (of Barrie, ON) at a gig promoting outdoor adventures. He was singing songs about float planes and DC3s, so I was interested. Turns out he is Chris Hadfield's brother. So I invited Dave onto my Great North Wind program. Afterwards, 3 quarters in jest, I said that Chris was always welcome to come and perform on my show. Little did I realize that I was making things happen - and quick!

Two weeks later, Dave phones: "Steve, are you still intersted in having Chris on your show?" Well, yahhh! So I got to spend the better part of an hour interviewing him and getting him to play songs that he and his brother have written. (Dave was on the show too.)

You do realize, don't you, that Chris Hadfield had the first guitar in outer space, and was the first person to play a guitar off this planet, and that he sung for a TV audience his 'Canadian Tire, Last Bastian of Men' song.  It's all here folks. And so is talk about space and 2001 and what it's like to work in space.....really neat stuff.

Great North Wind Classic
Graham Townsend on
George Wade and His Cornhuskers
September 29, 1997
Hear the Piecast

What's so special about these guys? They were Canadian recording pioneers and one of the first Trans-Canadian All-Star band whom he called 'His Cornhuskers'. Lead by George Wade, a fiddler who could call a good square dance, the band included some of the best Canadian musicians, inlcuding a teen-aged Jean Carignan. They played big ballrooms at the major hotels of the day, and it is said that after witnessing the finesse and professionalism of such a band, the great Don Messer decided to put a band together like Wade's.

The band recorded in the mid-30s for RCA Victor, 26 sides of music.

On this program I was joined by Canadian fiddle sensation, the late Graham Townsend, who filled in many gaps of the George Wade story. Graham's dad, Fred, was a Bernardo child, and was brought over to Canada from the United Kingdom and given to a traveling circus act. It was there that Fred learned to play the harmonica and call a square dance. Fred actually made one recording with George Wade and His Cornhuskers. Oddly enough, Fred became good friends with Messer and that was how Graham was brought to the great masters attention. Messer recorded 9 year old Graham's composition, 'The Princess Elizabeth Two-Step' in 1951. Really: this was a great show. Graham provided the music (on a cassette) from his own collection of George Wade 78s
